Dorm

Dorm

I'm about to say goodbye to Beida. I don't feel like I'm gonna miss this

place too much, because basically I didn't spend a lot of time here over the

four years and also because there're many things I don't like in this

university. For example, the dorm. Not that it's too small or messy or not

enough air, not that it doesn't have a private bathroom. We are actually a

lot better off compared with many other universities, since we do have a

desk for everyone of us and we have a card access to our building door which

allows us to have some night life and come back whenever we want. But they

keep away male visitors especially foreigners as if it were the highest

national secret. They have their reasons. They are ashamed to show

foreigners that the Chinese students of the top university in China are

still living in a condition that would be unbelievable as it is claiming to

be a top university in international terms. So they put all international

students in special and expensive dorms separated from the Chinese students

and would never let them know what it's like here. Hehe, for your

curiosity, and the absurdity of the stupid rule, and the contempt for their

thinking, here it is, my dorm, secret place of Beida, secret place of China,

for you foreigners.

Thank you Yanjun for accompanying me when I needed the final push to tide
over the hardest time before the last exam, when I most needed someone
around and most feared to be left alone in the familiar places in Beida, on
the day before the exam and after he's gone.

Public Shower Hall

(Open hours: 14:30 – 10:00, no enter after 9:45)

This is just across the street of the building I live, which is pretty near for me, but still a very hard task in winter when you get your hair frozen when you walk back to dorm. For students living several streets away it’s even a bigger challenge. This is the only shower place for ALL Chinese students in Beida.

It has two floors. The first floor is for guys; the second for girls. Since I’ve never been inside the first floor, I can only offer the insider’s view on the second floor. There are two halls, each one with 3 or 4 rows of shower sprays, which are not divided or enclosed in cells, but are wide open. So when you shower, you can see, talk, rub others. Between the rows of shower sprays and outside, there is a change room with boxes where you can put your clothes and towels and get changed. It’s always wet and dirty, and you have to be careful for each move when you walk and change because you don’t want to get dirty water on your newly washed body and your clean clothes. Also, when you are done and walk out from your spray, it’s almost impossible to avoid being spread by the water from others along the row and close to the passage, which is quite an annoyance because you don’t want to get the water splashed from other’s body when they wash themselves. Kinda pity there’s no picture to offer. Hope my description adding to your imagination can give a rough picture of our little shower story:)

便到三公主房裡拿走一個髮夾;

也偷偷地拿走四公主的一個髮夾;

四公主如法炮製拿走了五公主的髮夾;

五公主一樣拿走六公主的髮夾;

這個圓滿就有了缺憾;

The staircase in front of the library at Beida (Peking University). If you

have ever taken a taxi ride in Beijing, you surely have the feeling that the

driver really wants to kill you on the road. But let me tell you, there's

really nothing to worry about, the Beijing taxi drivers' skills are not to

be doubted. If they can handle the staircase situations, the flat road is

just a piece of cake. So just sit back and relax when you are racing at

100m/h with other cars on Beijing streets.

Although I have not yet got my certificate yet, we rent the costumes and

took some pictures on campus. Look really stupid, but still something

special and funny.

Building of foreign languages

This is an alright picture, without the funny hat :P

Every Saturday afternoon when the MBA class is over, the cars line up from

every direction to the west gate, the only gate through which the cars are

allowed to pass. Stupid system. They give each car a ticket when they

enter the campus and check the time as they exit to calculate a fee charged

for parking on campus, the whole process very slow. We have around 6 gates,

at least 4 of which are wide enough for cars to pass, 3 of which are for

school cars only. If their policy does not help prevent cars from entering

in the university, if the cars will be here anyway coming from one gate or

4, why do they make such trouble and create such mess? Why don't they just

open all the four gates at the peak time every Saturday?
