After getting hit hard by a 20cm*10cm piece of wood dropped from the top of a 4-floor building on the shoulder today, I'm feeling quite relieved that I finally finished my business here and eager to leave this country (Belgium that is) permanently. I also count myself sort of lucky that it was wood and not stone or iron, and it narrowly missed falling on my head. I don't want to uselessly complain about accidents that unfortunately happen everyday and can happen to anyone. However, I find it rather odd that such dangerous and irresponsible and completely unprofessional construction practice can be found in a rather developed country like Belgium. I wonder if people feel safe living in a place where unprotected amateur-style construction takes place right above the busiest street where they must pass through everyday, where stuff falling is more than just accidents, but is absolutely predictable and expected in this case. Accidents do happen, but harms done due to routinely conscious mis-practice such as dangerous jobs without basic protection is definitely avoidable.
Place of the unhappy encounter: Naamstraat 100, Leuven, Belgium. (Watch out!)
